Club Hisory

Inbhear Sceine sac was founded in 1989 by five former members of another Kerry diving club and they were Colm o Sullivan ,Dave and Pat Westwell, Seamus Galvin and Andrew Thoma. As most of our diving was carried out in the south west of the county it seemed that the obvious thing to do was to form a club for that area so we set about forming I.S.S.A.C.. .we put together a constitution and contacted the then regional diving officer -Colm o Shea . when all the procedures were in place we made a presentation at the next C.F.T delegate meeting in Galway that year .we were then duly accepted into the C.F.T . family of diving clubs. Our first boat was an old 5.5 metre inflatable with 10 inch tubes which was bought for £600. The boat was put on a dodgy trailer that was donated to the club by a" kind old soul " . We purchased a new 40 h.p. Yamaha out board motor for £2300 . no expense spared in that area .The craft even though old was spacious and robust and conveyed us to many spectacle dive site around west cork and Kerry . The name inbhear sceine comes from celtic mythology when it was said that invading celts had buried one of their wives in Waterville and the grieving husband had called Kenmare bay after her .Inbhear being the Irish for harbour or river mouth and Sceine was the name of the unfortunate woman who died . for those of us who rember the old map of Ireland hanging on the wall of the national school you may remember " Inbhear Sceine " in place of " Kenmare river". in time we were joined by other divers and the club went from strength to strength evolving into the successful that we enjoy today thanks to the dedication and commitment of our members who continue to keep Inbhear Sceine a highly active club . "long may it be so" . Andrew Thoma ---Founder member.
